Project Rose 2009What is Project Rose?

I designed Project Rose as a Valentine’s Day fundraiser that could be run by students in schools and colleges to raise money for breast cancer research.  In essence, it is a Valentine’s Day rose delivery service that allows fellow students to anonymously send their love to their friends or a special someone whilst supporting the work of Cancer Research UK.

For the cost of £2.00 (still less than the cost of most Valentine’s Day cards) students anonymously pre-order pink silk roses from student volunteers at their school or college in the weeks prior to Valentine’s Day.  The roses are then delivered by fellow students on or in the run up to Valentine’s Day.   It’s that simple!

Retaining the anonymity of the sender is the key to the project’s success.  It makes it fun to implement and creates great excitement on the day.  The campaign is a real ‘win-win’ because it creates that ‘feel good’ factor.  I love being cupid for a day and seeing people’s faces as they receive a rose from a friend or secret admirer!

Why pink silk roses?

I choose to run the campaign with silk roses because students wanted to keep and collect their roses as mementos of their time in school or college.  It also solved the problem of the roses wilting throughout the school day!  I choose the colour pink for two reasons.  Firstly, it is the colour of Cancer Research UK’s big breast cancer awareness campaign.  Secondly, I wanted Project Rose to be less about love and more about friendship.  In fact, many students choose to send roses to their friends as a thank you for their friendship throughout the year, as well as sending one to that special someone!

Why get involved?

With Project Rose I wanted to create a new type of fund-raising campaign that students could own, organise and run by themselves with minimal adult involvement.  A campaign where, by working together, students had the potential to make millions of pounds for Cancer Research UK’s vital research into breast cancer.  By getting involved you can help achieve my dream of making this a national campaign run by teenagers and help move breast cancer research towards finding a cure for this devastating disease that affects over 45,000 new lives a year.
By working together and running the campaign yearly in schools and colleges up and down the UK we cannot only increase awareness but will truly help save lives.

If you would like to get involved please take a look at our ‘How Can I Get Involved?’ section of this website.

If you would like more information on the story behind Project Rose please take a look at the other articles within this section.

I really hope you will get involved – there is so much we can achieve by working together.

With love and thanks – Lizze x
